This week we are jumping back into our series through the Gospel of Mark. Our last passage in chapter 4 shows Jesus calming the storm and sea in a moment when the disciples thought they were about to lose their lives and it leaves them wondering, "Who is this?". Now as we begin chapter 5, Jesus displays an incredible amount of power over the forces of evil as he casts out a legion of demons from a tortured man. We are about to embark on exploring the portrait of Jesus as Prophet, the miracle worker, clearly sent by God. They are beginning to see more and more the divine presence that resides in the person of Jesus.

As you go through this first story of chapter 5, ponder some of these questions:

Why is the location and region of this story so important?

What is ironic about the way the demons speak to Jesus?

What can we learn about how Jesus looks at us through the story of the man and the pigs?

What does the response of the townspeople say about state of humanity?
